Studying Sports at College isn’t just about physical exercise and team sports. It’s so much more, with classes in human anatomy, nutrition, health and wellbeing, communication, physio therapy, leadership and teamwork.

Speaking to some of our Sports students from the College’s Greenock campus, Bianca, Jordan, Greg and Jennifer, all had their own unique stories about what brought them to study sport and what career paths they hope to pursue.

For 29-year-old Bianca Johnson, it was losing a staggering 5 stone that inspired her. For both Jordan and Jennifer, it was something they had always had a passion for and for Greg who loved training it was about enhancing his knowledge and skills to better to himself.

Speaking to Bianca she said, “I was a size 22-24. Going to the gym was initially something I done to lose the weight but then I started to really enjoy it and that’s what inspired me to apply to the course.”

Coming to College not quite sure what to expect from the course they all agreed they were pleasantly surprised by the vast subjects that are covered.

22-year-old Jordan commented,

“There’s a broad subject base, so it gives you a bit of everything. It’s a good taster into the range of different routes you can go down like sports coaching, PT, physio therapy, sports massage etc.”

All enjoying different aspects of the course they all agreed on what a positive experience each of them has had, from the supportive lecturers, friendly atmosphere and they all remarked on how much their confidence had grown.

18-year-old Greg said,

“It’s been fun, everyone is really nice which makes it a great atmosphere to be in. It’s really helped with my confidence which I think will benefit me in everything that I do.”

17-year-old Jennifer, the youngest in the class who came straight from school at the age of 15 has thrived since being able to focus on something that she enjoys.

“I was nervous about being the youngest, but everyone has been really supportive making the transition really easy – my age has never been a barrier here. I’ve really come out my shell and have enjoyed getting to meet new people who all have the same interest as me.”

With summer just around the corner the students are looking forward to returning next year to further their studies and take the next step to the future careers in PT, Physio Therapy and Sports Coaching.

Bianca concluded “Don’t let anything put you off studying, never think that you can’t do it because you can.”
