At 49 years old, Julie Crawford was introduced to the Ferguslie Learning Centre through Quarries after facing significant health challenges. Eager to rebuild her confidence, she initially enrolled in the Sewing Fashion and Mindfulness courses. Gaining momentum, Julie then challenged herself further by taking on the Allotment course.
Speaking to Julie she said, “Following a subarachnoid haemorrhage stroke I was in severe condition and had to restart my life again. I was feeling very low physically and mentally with having to re-learn many aspect of daily life. With a real lack of confidence, I was introduced the Ferguslie through my key working at Quarries.
‘Having done sewing in my 20s I decided to embark on this course as I knew I really enjoyed the skill. This was followed by the Mindfulness course which really aided my recovery and I could see huge improvements in myself.
It helped me feel better both physically and mentally, helping me to relax, my sleeping got better as I’d been suffering from insomnia and my confidence was really boosted.”
Following the success of these courses and as her confidence grew, Julie went on to study Allotment challenging herself further.
Julie continued, “I developed new knowledge in growing plants and working alongside others, supported by an encouraging tutor and lovely classmates.
‘While the courses were challenging at first, particularly due to my memory impairment and visual difficulties, the support systems at Ferguslie Learning Centre made a huge difference. Staff provided repeated instructions and offered printed materials in larger text, and used brightly coloured equipment to aid my visibility. These adjustments allowed me to progress and enjoy their learning.
The most rewarding aspects of studying at Ferguslie was the sense of community, the step-by-step support from staff and peers, and being able to continuously build new skills. It proved much more than academic; it helped my confidence, social abilities, and my emotional wellbeing.”
When asked if she would recommend Ferguslie, Julie said, “I’d recommend it for so many reasons. Its friendly, encouraging and helps you to build new skills.
Everyone here is so supportive and help you to go at your own pace - It’s been a crucial lifeline for me.
Looking ahead, Julie plans to continue developing her abilities through further study, taking small, steady steps, guided by expert advice and a deep understanding of the value of persistence.
