Students studying the creative industries at West College Scotland had the amazing opportunity to take their studies out of the class room and film a unique live performance of Glasgow band Baby Chaos.

Students from the Film & Television, Sound Production and Music Business courses came together to set-up cameras, recording equipment and a live sound system in the impressive vaulted ceiling event space at Oran Mor in Glasgow.

Far from a traditional gig, the five band members’ set-up on the floor in the middle of the venue, all facing each other.  Just like they do when they rehearse.

The band wanted to share this unique experience with their fans, so an audience of around 80 fans were invited along. These fans not only provided a wonderful atmosphere for the filming, but also became part of the set, as they were all around the band as they performed.

The unusual layout resulted in several technical challenges, however with the guidance of their tutors and other professionals, the students worked brilliantly and the event was a huge success.

Billy Kinnear, Curriculum and Quality Leader at West College Scotland's Paisley campus commented:

I’ve known the guys from Baby Chaos for quite a long time now and the band have a new album coming out. Touring around the country to support a new release is a major challenge as they have busy jobs and young families. After a chat with the band, we decided to record a live performance while they play songs from their previous albums and a selection from their new album as well.

The band were recorded performing the way they would do as if they were in the rehearsal studio - facing each other. It’s quite a unique filming method and we can’t find anyone else who has done this.

Sound Engineering student Mark Lees, 28 from Clydebank added:

The whole day was brilliant, it gave me a good taste of what it’s like to work in a professional setting. Especially when you get an experienced band like Baby Chaos to work with – you've the full set up, the filming and concert to get on with. We weren’t being told what to do – but were guided throughout the whole thing, which was a lot of fun.

NC Television student, Krystal Cooley from Greenock said:

The Baby Chaos gig was my first major of experience with cameras out with the college - it was so different and such an exciting opportunity. This project the biggest we’ve worked on so far. It’s been an eye opener, especially to see how a gig like this all comes together.

Fraser Johns, 21 from Paisley and a NC Television Student said:

The set-up was unbelievable. Can’t believe how many items and equipment was needed to set up for a 2-hour gig – It’s incredible the amount of work that goes in.

Nic Gordon, Manager of Baby Chaos spoke about his experience of the event. He said, ''The band and I have wanted to film an event like this for several years, so when Billy suggested that it would be a fantastic real-world project for the students, we were all delighted to be involved. Having worked closely with all of the different departments to coordinate the filming, I was thrilled that the students were getting the chance to do some hands-on learning.  When the project is all edited the students will be able to look back and know what a valuable part they played in the finished result.

Many thanks to Oran Mor for allowing us to use their stunning event space and to AdLib for providing brilliant lighting to make the event look amazing.'
