West College Scotland Students Inspire the Next Generation Through Games Development Project

West College Scotland has once again partnered with Lochfield Primary School to deliver its highly successful HNC Computer Games Development student project—now celebrating its 10th year.

The long-standing collaboration continues to go from strength to strength, providing a unique and engaging learning experience for both college students and primary school pupils. This year, HNC students were tasked with designing a computer game inspired by the Commonwealth Games, with Primary 6 pupils from Lochfield Primary acting as their clients.

At the start of the project, West College Scotland students visited Lochfield Primary School to meet the pupils and gain valuable insight into their ideas, interests and expectations. Using this feedback, the students returned to the College to design and develop their games, ensuring each concept was shaped by the creativity and imagination of their young clients.

On Monday 2 June, 32 Primary 6 pupils visited the College’s Paisley campus for an exciting day of game testing. The pupils had the opportunity to trial four different games created by the HNC students, offering feedback and celebrating the results of their collaboration.

The atmosphere on the day was full of energy and enthusiasm, with pupils sharing how much they enjoyed the experience as it’s not every day they get to play computer games in school. Many commented on how different and creative the games were compared to those they usually play, with one pupil even expressing an interest in pursuing a future in games development.

The winning team, Mustachio Games, took home the top prize for their game Scots, Sports and Improbably Thwarts. The team praised the project for giving them the opportunity to work closely with the pupils and bring their ideas to life. They highlighted how many of their characters were inspired directly by the children they met, and how the experience helped them enhance their development and animation skills while having fun along the way.

This has been another fantastic and successful event for our students. Building on the success of previous years, we’ve developed a really strong partnership with Lochfield Primary School. It’s always a pleasure to see our students grow in confidence and skills while working on such a creative and collaborative project.”

Lyle Brown, Depute Head Teacher at Lochfield Primary School, commented, "I am absolutely delighted to celebrate another great year of our partnership with West College Scotland. Having been closely involved with this initiative for the past ten years, I have had the privilege of watching this project grow from strength to strength. It remains a true highlight of our school calendar.
Every single year, a new group of our children is given this fantastic, hands-on experience. Acting as 'clients' for the HNC Games Development students doesn't just ignite their creativity—it opens their eyes to what the future can hold. By stepping onto a college campus and seeing their own ideas brought to life, our pupils gain an invaluable, early insight into the positive destinations available to them after primary school.

This collaboration is a shining example of how meaningful partnerships can inspire the next generation of digital creators, and we look forward to many more years of success together
