West College Scotland Student Worked as a Journalist at the 2026 Winter Olympics

West College Scotland is celebrating the achievements of NQ Creative Industries student Maksym Rozenko, originally from Ukraine, who worked as an accredited journalist at the XXV Winter Olympic Games Milano Cortina 2026.

Maksym, who studies at our Greenock campus, travelled to Italy in official WCS‑branded clothing to join the global press team covering the Games. The event, held from 6–22 February, brought together around 2,900 athletes from 92 countries. Team GB was represented by 53 Olympians across 11 sports, including 17 Scottish athletes, 10 of whom competed in curling.

They were supported by approximately 3,000 journalists and photographers from across the world. Maksym was the first West College Scotland student to cover the Olympics as an accredited journalist.

Reflecting on the experience, Maksym said: “During the media day in the Olympic Village, I found the building where Team GB was located, chatted with the Olympians for a while, and wished them luck. This was my first time working at the Winter Olympics, so I was exposed to a lot of new and wonderful winter sports — such as short track, freestyle skiing and, of course, curling (the birthplace of curling is Scotland). Although the GB men’s team were defeated by Canada in the final, their strong performance throughout the tournament showcased impressive potential ahead of the 2030 Olympics.”

Speaking about the support he received, he added: “The College responded very well to my creative trip to Italy. Working at the Olympics is the pinnacle of a sports journalist’s career. But at the end of February, I was very happy to return to my studies. As a journalist, I enjoy the Media Project and Podcasting modules the most, and I would also like to note the high professional level of every tutor on the NQ Creative Industries course. I have never regretted starting this course last year.”
