Students Take Flight with Real Airline Training Experience in Manchester

Travel and Tourism students from West College Scotland’s Clydebank and Paisley campuses recently took part in an exciting residential trip to Manchester, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in real airline training environments.

HNC and Level6 students partnered with EDM Sky People, a leading aviation training provider, to access industry-standard facilities at a state-of-the-art aviation training academy. The experience allowed students to take their classroom learning to new heights by immersing themselves in realistic airline safety and emergency procedures.

During the visit, students participated in Cabin Emergency Evacuation Training Exercises (CEET), using a full-scale aircraft simulator complete with decompression and communication systems, alongside fire and smoke simulation to recreate authentic emergency scenarios. This provided a unique opportunity to develop critical decision-making skills in high-pressure situations.

Students also trained on a purpose-built fire training rig, designed to simulate in-flight fire emergencies. This hands-on training helped build confidence in managing potentially life-threatening situations. In addition, learners practised evacuation procedures using both dual and single-lane emergency slides, replicating real-world airline safety protocols in a controlled and safe environment.

Students also recognised the impact of the experience on their future career aspirations. One student said

I really enjoyed the trip – it was a fantastic experience, especially as I want to be cabin crew. It was great to put into practice what we’ve been learning in the classroom, and I think it will be really beneficial when I apply for jobs and help me stand out.
