Students Take Flight at Travel & Tourism Ceremony

Students from local secondary schools marked the end of their Travel & Tourism course in style this week, with a special ceremony celebrating their achievements and future ambitions in the aviation and tourism industries.

Attending college for two afternoons each week, the students have had the opportunity to build valuable knowledge and practical skills alongside their wider school studies, providing a strong start to their future careers.

This week’s event, held in West College Scotland’s custom-built aircraft cabin, invited guests to come on board and experience the highlights of the students’ journey. The ceremony featured a graduation-style presentation, where each student received a certificate along with their coveted wings badge.

Guests were also treated to live demonstrations, as students confidently delivered a professional safety briefing before showcasing their customer service skills through an in-flight-style trolley service.

Gavin Williams, the Managing Director of Glasgow Airport was in attendance at the ceremony, as he came along to support the students and see their work firsthand. In addition to this, Gavin acted as a great source of inspiration when he revealed that he had previously studied Travel and Tourism, a course which undoubtedly built the foundations for his current role. Gavin praised the group for their professionalism and dedication and admitted that he could see some of the group taking over his role in the future.

Lecturer Kirsty Caig expressed her pride in the group’s progress, reflecting on how much they had grown since the start of the course.

These pupils have not only learned about the travel industry, but also developed confidence, communication skills, customer service skills and teamwork. They’ve truly embraced the professional standards expected in aviation and tourism and will be an asset to the industry.

Student Ruaridh Keating also spoke of his time at West and explained how he would be taking away more than just the knowledge and skills he has gained throughout the course:

It’s been such a good group. We’ve supported each other, made new friends and improved our ability to work as part of a team.

The ceremony ended with refreshments and photos, capturing a proud moment for students ready to embark on their next journey—whether continuing their studies or setting their sights on the skies.
