Pharmacy Apprentice Leads Sepsis Awareness Project

Nicole Easton, a Pre-Registration Pharmacy Technician, has successfully delivered a health promotion project aimed at raising awareness of sepsis and antimicrobial resistance.

Nicole, who is currently undertaking her apprenticeship with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde in partnership with West College Scotland, delivered the project at The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre in Glasgow. The project formed part of Nicole's training and provided an opportunity to raise awareness on two key healthcare issues that have a direct impact on patient care.

The Pre-Registration Pharmacy Technician apprenticeship combines workplace-based learning with academic study, enabling trainees to work towards a nationally recognised qualification and registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). Throughout the programme, trainees gain experience across a range of pharmacy services, all while developing the knowledge and skills required to support patient care and the safe and effective use of medicines.

Speaking about her experience, Nicole says:

The Pre-Registration Pharmacy Technician programme has provided me with a fantastic opportunity to develop my clinical knowledge and practical skills while working directly within the healthcare service. What I enjoy most about the role is that every day brings opportunities to learn something new, helping me make a positive difference to patient care. Once qualified, I hope to continue developing my skills within hospital pharmacy and work towards becoming a clinical pharmacy technician, allowing me to further contribute to improving patient care.

Nicole's hard work and commitment to the programme has impressed both students and staff at West. Matthew Lauder, Pharmacy Lecturer, says of Nicole:

It has been great to see Nicole apply the skills and knowledge she has developed throughout her apprenticeship to deliver a project on such an important health promotion topic. This highlights the valuable contribution Pre-Registration Pharmacy Technicians can make in real healthcare settings.
