Double Win for Science Student, Heather Harley

Winning any award is an achievement in itself, but one which is made even more impressive with a back-to-back win. This is exactly what happened for Heather Harley, who won West College Scotland’s Science Student of the Year in 2023-24, and then the award for her course in recognition of academic excellence and commitment to learning the following year. Heather, who is currently studying our Level 6 Access to HN Science course started off at West on our Level 4 NC Applied Science and has since completed Level 5 NQ Applied Science, both of which resulted in her double win. As if that wasn’t enough, Heather describes how she felt “lost” prior to joining West, and that the college, course and staff have had a “huge impact” on her life:

I have always been set on studying science but I wasn’t always sure how I could achieve this when I hadn’t been able to study it at school. Finding the level 4 course was amazing for me as it required no prior teaching of the subject, just a willingness to learn and apply yourself.

Heather has definitely proven her willingness to learn, and she has impressed with her attitude towards her studies. The team at West has enjoyed watching Heather grow in confidence and realise that her dreams are achievable and very much within reach. It was an honour to be able to reward Heather’s efforts with her Student of the Year accolades, and is proof that college is a path which can nourish, strengthen and reward those who take it.

Sandra Spence, Curriculum Quality Leader in Science, describes how Heather “has a 'can do' attitude and is naturally inquisitive, both ideal characteristics for someone who wants a career in science”. Heather has not only excelled academically, but she has volunteered as a lab steward, participated in a research project on hypertension, acted as a class rep for her peer group and contributed to the success of departmental fundraising activities.

“Valuable, supportive and impactful” are the three words which spring to mind when Heather thinks of West. She describes how the staff put a lot of effort into making sure their students are armed with the knowledge, skills and practical experience to succeed.

Heather plans to continue at West next year on our HNC Applied Science (with Biology and Chemistry), before applying for Pharmacology at university. Sandra Spence is certain that Heather’s “fantastic work ethic” will see that she achieves this dream. We wish Heather the very best of luck and are excited to continue to watch her flourish.
