21-year-old, Aimee Cooke from Greenock has excelled in her apprenticeship with Diodes Incorporated, now graduating this summer with her HNC Engineering Systems. With EQUATE Scotland estimating that only 25% of employees within the STEM sector are women, Engineering could have been a challenging career choice for Aimee.

Speaking of her experience Aimee said, “Although the industry is currently a more male dominated workforce, I have never felt as though I am at a disadvantage compared to my male colleagues. Everyone is given the same opportunities to learn and develop their skills.”

Currently working at Diodes Inverclyde site as an Apprentice Maintenance Technician, Aimee assists in the maintenance of the production equipment within the factory, which involves both giving the tools regular ‘check ups’ and resolving any issues the tools may have. On choose to follow the apprenticeship pathway Aimee said, “An apprenticeship has always appealed to me as it gives you the opportunity to gain relevant work experience whilst receiving relevant qualifications. It also gives young people the chance to earn money whilst developing their skills within the workplace.”

She continued,

“Being an apprentice, you get to work with time served engineers who can help and give advice whenever it is needed. Everyone has so much experience and knowledge that they are able to pass on which you may not be able to learn in a classroom. An apprenticeship is such a great opportunity for anyone who is considering applying, but you must be willing to put in the work to ensure that you get as much out of your training as you possibly can.”

Speaking about her passion for this exciting industry, Aimee said, “Engineering is such a diverse field of study that has job opportunities all over the world. Every engineer has a different insight and approach to bring to the profession. It is Important to maintain this diversity to ensure that the outcome is the best it can be.”

Well on track to complete her apprenticeship and become a qualified maintenance technician, Aimee was selected as the prize winner this year for her HNC Engineering Systems course. Her lecturers said that she was an outstanding student, consistently showing hard work and determination and an exceptional example to her peers. On what’s next for Aimee she said, “ I am looking forward to gaining experience in the industry and I am open to explore any training opportunities that may be available once my apprenticeship is complete.” Congratulations Aimee!
