Why Study at West?

At West College Scotland, you’ll develop the creative, technical and professional skills needed to progress into today’s television and screen industries. You will be taught by industry-experienced staff and work on practical productions that reflect current industry practice, taking on real production roles across planning, filming, post-production and delivery.

This HND course is the new SQA next gen HND Television Production course and is designed around collaborative project work, giving you the opportunity to specialise in an area that interests you most while building the teamwork, communication and professional behaviours expected in industry. Throughout the year, you will create portfolio-ready work that demonstrates your skills and prepares you for employment, freelance opportunities or progression to degree-level study.

What will I learn?

You will work across a range of television production projects, developing both technical craft skills and professional production experience in studio and location environments.

What qualifications do I need?

To gain entry to the qualification, ideally you will have an HNC qualification in a relevant creative qualification, such as the HNC Television, HNC Media or another relevant SCQF Level 7 qualification.

Applications from learners with relevant creative media qualifications, equivalent experience, or industry background are also welcome.

What can I do after?

Successful completion of HND Television can lead directly to entry-level work in the television and wider screen industries, or progression to further study.

Graduates may progress into roles such as:

  • Floor Runner
  • Post-Production Runner
  • Researcher
  • Camera Assistant
  • Editing Assistant
  • Production Assistant
  • Technical Trainee

Many students also progress to degree-level study in areas such as Television, Broadcast Production, Filmmaking or Screenwriting.

The course is designed to prepare you for both employment and freelance working, helping you build the practical experience, portfolio and professional confidence needed to take your next step in the industry.
