National 5 Maths

What will I learn?

National 5 Maths will build on previous experience in mathematics and numeracy while helping develop greater confidence in the subject and a positive attitude towards further study. The course includes simplification of expressions , evaluation of formulae, solving and manipulating equations, working with graphs, carrying out calculations on the lengths and angles of shapes, trigonometry, geometry, number processes and statistics.

National 5 replaces the Standard Grade Credit and Intermediate 2 qualifications and is viewed as equivalent to both.

National 5 Applications Maths is also available and may be more appropriate for those with limited Maths experience or who require a more practical Maths course. Applicants should apply for Applications under the appropriate course heading.

What qualifications do I need?

Learners would normally be expected to have attained the skills, knowledge and understanding required by prior experience of studying at National 5 level.

Applications will not be processed unless accompanied by a statement detailing previous Maths qualifications/experience and reasons for applying. For example, please detail if you have previously studied National 5 units or standard grade credit/Intermediate 2 and the grade achieved. Selection will take into account both the level of previous study and the supplementary information provided.

All applications must include a personal statement detailing why you want to study Maths and what Maths qualifications you currently hold. Please also provide details of any prior attempts towards this qualification even if unsuccessful

What can I do after?

Both National 5 Maths and National 5 Application of Maths are minimum entry requirements for primary and secondary teaching as well as for a variety of other courses. National 5 Maths can also be used to progress to study Higher Maths.

It is the responsibility of applicants to confirm entry requirements for their chosen courses before embarking on National 5 Maths.
