What will I learn?
The Higher English Course can involve studying plays, poetry, short stories and novels. You will also be writing personal, discursive and critical essays. The course develops your listening and talking skills as well. It is aimed at those leaving school and needing additional qualifications - or higher grades; those seeking qualifications for entry to higher education programmes; individuals planning a return to study or looking at a change of career; and even if you simply want to develop your interest in literature and language.
If you are studying online, please be aware that you should have a reliable internet connection and a suitable device – for example a laptop with word processing software and capable of running MS Teams.
You should also be aware that your prelim and – of course – the exam will be held on campus.
What qualifications do I need?
As a guideline, you would usually have an English National 5 pass, Standard Grade 1 or Intermediate 2 English at 'A' or 'B', an HN or degree qualification, however, you may have very competent English language skills whilst not possessing these minimum entry qualifications. If you do, we would very much encourage you to apply and we may ask that you demonstrate to us your written language skills on the application. Acceptance onto the programme will be based on: evidence of entry qualifications, place availability and a short written personal statement on application.
