Overview

What will I learn?

This is a one year course that has been designed in agreement with The University of Glasgow, to allow successful students to progress onto Year 2 of specific degree programs within the University’s College of Social Sciences.

An HNC in Social Sciences seeks to develop analytical, evaluative, problem solving and communication skills. This course provides in-depth study of the main social science subjects including:-

  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Politics
  • History
  • An Evidence Based Approach to Social Issues

What qualifications do I need?

Two SQA Higher passes or equivalent. One at B and one at C (strong preference for English and Social Science subjects).

NC Social Science Level 6 – successful completion of all units (gaining your group award). You will also need an academic reference/profile.

This is a Widening Participation programme. In addition to the entry requirements above, to be eligible, applicants must not previously have completed an undergraduate degree, and must meet at least one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be Scottish domiciled, residing within the target postcode area (SIMD, deciles 1-4).
  • Be care-experienced
  • Be estranged and living without family support
  • Have caring responsibilities

Successful applicants will be invited to the college to attend an information session where you will be given a presentation about the course and have an opportunity to ask questions. At this session, you will also be asked to complete a short written task and will have a one to one interview with a member of the Social Science team.

What can I do after?

This course runs in partnership with the University of Glasgow. Upon successful completion of this course, students are guaranteed progression into year 2 of the following degrees within the Social Science department of the University;-

      • Social and Public Policy
      • Quantitative Methods
      • History
      • Philosophy
      • International Relations

During the HNC, students will be enrolled as University of Glasgow students, benefitting from additional sessions at the University’s Main Campus throughout their HNC.

A successful candidate is one who receives a good reference, achieves with a grade of ‘Merit’, and completes all elements run by the University of Glasgow.

 

If you are not successful in directly articulating onto university, there is also the opportunity to continue onto an HND Social Sciences and then apply to university.

Studying Social Sciences also has the advantage of keeping your career options open with successful students moving into careers such as: social research, media research, human resources, public relations, teaching, policing, social work, charity, and community-based work.
