Through this partnership, students at the College have had the opportunity to volunteer with the Foundation, gaining valuable hands-on experience while contributing to a variety of community-focused programmes. Seven students so far have since gone on to secure employment within the Foundation, using the skills and insights gained through their involvement to make a meaningful difference across the local area.
The Foundation, which is dedicated to tackling social challenges across Renfrewshire and creating sustainable, long-term change, has also supported the Sport & Fitness students in their on-campus learning. They have delivered impactful workshops on mental health to our NC students, providing support and education on a vital topic that aligns with both organisations’ shared commitment to wellbeing.
In addition, the collaboration has extended to mutual professional development with staff from the Foundation taking part in coaching sessions delivered by the College’s lecturers, focusing on enhancing delivery of their community programmes.
Curriculum Quality Leader, Claire Whitelaw said, “We’re incredibly proud of our partnership with the St Mirren FC Charitable Foundation. It not only offers our students fantastic opportunities for personal and professional development but also strengthens our connection with the community we serve. Through this partnership, we are helping our students into employment and building a stronger, more supportive Renfrewshire community."
Community Development Lead, Martin Cavan, who is also a former student at West said,
“West College Scotland are a fantastic partner. The range of expertise and experience amongst Claire and her team is second to none. Working closely with them, offering placements, allowed us to see firsthand how students developed while providing them with an opportunity to gain essential experience. It was then very easy to create a pathway beneficial for all. They have been a fantastic addition to the coaching staff at St Mirren FC Charitable Foundation”
This partnership stands as a powerful example of how education and community organisations can come together to make a lasting difference.
