As part of this innovative scheme, students from the College’s Greenock campus have been given the opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the supply side of the plumbing industry. Through work experience placements with HPD Plumbing Supplies, they are learning the essential skills required to excel in the trade – from dealing with customers and handling deliveries, to conducting stock takes, replenishing shelves, and exploring the vast array of plumbing parts. These experiences are designed to develop not only their technical abilities but also enhance their vital Meta Skills, such as communication, problem-solving, and teamwork.

In addition to their placements at HPD, students will also be going out on work experience with qualified plumbers, as part of the partnership’s commitment to supporting them towards securing apprenticeships. This collaborative approach aims to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of the plumbing profession, bridging the gap between classroom learning and industry practice.

The pilot programme is currently being rolled out with students from Greenock and is set to expand to Clydebank and Paisley campuses next term.

Bal Boparai, Director of HPD Plumbing Supplies, and the HPD team are passionate about giving back to the community and creating opportunities for young people in the areas served by the College.

Bal said,

"At HPD Plumbing Supplies, we believe in investing in the future of our trade. Partnering with West College Scotland allows us to provide hands-on industry experience to pre-apprentice plumbing students, giving them the practical knowledge and confidence to succeed. We are proud to support young talent and strengthen the pipeline of skilled professionals entering the field."

Nicola Murray, Head of Construction and Building Services at West College Scotland, commented: “This partnership with HPD Plumbing Supplies is a fantastic initiative that will not only enrich the learning experiences of our students but also strengthen the links between education and industry. It’s a real opportunity for our young people to build confidence, develop essential workplace skills, and pave the way for future apprenticeships and careers.”
