West College Scotland is delighted to announce that it has once again received generous support from the John Mather Trust, with a total funding award of £14,000 for the 2024/25 academic year. The ‘Tools of the Trade’ programme aims to break down barriers for young people entering skilled professions, unlocking potential and supporting emerging talent. This year’s funding supported students across five departments: Hospitality, Hairdressing & Beauty, Construction, Motor Vehicle, and Creative Industries. These students, many in the final stages of their studies, received tailored toolkits specific to their vocational pathway—providing a significant boost during a challenging cost-of-living period.

  • Hospitality students received professional knife sets
  • Hairdressing, Beauty and Makeup Artistry were gifted professional-standard hair dryers, straighteners and makeup starter kits
  • Motor Vehicle students received comprehensive mechanical toolkits essential for entering garages and workshops upon graduation.
  • Construction students in Bricklaying & Joinery, Painting and Decorating, and Roofing received additional trade-specific equipment to prepare them for real-world employment.
  • Creative Industries – HNC and HND Photography students were supported with professional photography toolkits

Gillian Gray, Development Funding Executive at West College Scotland, commented:

“The 2024/25 academic year continues to present significant cost-of-living challenges for our students. The John Mather Tools Awards have once again made a meaningful difference, equipping a group of 92 students with the essential tools they need to succeed in their studies and take the next step toward their chosen careers. On behalf of the students and staff at West College Scotland, we extend our sincere thanks to the Trustees of The John Mather Trust for their continued support and generosity.”
