As the Provost of Renfrewshire, Lorraine Cameron’s calendar can’t have many gaps. Despite this, Lorraine was delighted to be invited along to West College Scotland’s HND Photography showcase, held on Tuesday 10 May at West’s Paisley campus.

Not only did Lorraine get to see the amazing photography on offer, but she had the chance to speak to students about their work and hear all about the inspiration for different shots.

“I left with a new appreciation of photography, and of the time and effort, and creative thinking, that goes into it.”

Lorraine’s enjoyment was shared by all who attended, with the event hailed a great success. Guests attended from far and wide and were treated to pizza from West’s talented Level 5 Professional Cookery students, who set up and ran their own pop-up stand. This collaborative approach allowed different departments to showcase their talents and to gain a wider understanding of what goes on within other areas of the college.

Julie Cooper, one of West’s Curriculum Enhancement Lecturers in Photography and Media was equally as delighted with the event and could barely hide her pride at the talent on show.

“It has been an honour being a part of our students’ journeys, and each and every one should be so proud of themselves.”

It was clear from the students that they were indeed proud of themselves, and glad that they had embarked on their Photography journey at West. The general feeling in the room was one of excitement, not only at getting to showcase their work, but at what the future may hold once they graduate in September.

Stuart McDonagh, from Shawlands, explained how he has plans to travel the world with his camera and build his portfolio.

“It was through photography that I realised I could live my dream life, and this course has allowed me to pursue that.”

Some students are already forging their way in the industry, with Angela Cranwell, from Clydebank, telling of her excitement at having the opportunity to photograph her music idol, Nik Kershaw.

“Being able to photograph Nik was a definite ‘pinch me’ moment – I am so luck to say I get to live my dream.”

And Nik himself has been impressed at Angela’s skills, saying “it has been a special joy watching her discover her previously hidden talents.”

It was evident from the varied displays on the night that students have freedom to bring their own styles to photos. With portraits, landscapes, high-action sports shots and food and drink images being showcased, there really was something to cater to every taste. Sharron McGrady, from Paisley, was particularly excited to express her love of bright colours in her work:

“You get to be adventurous, you get to experiment. You get to be you.”

With graduation looming for these talented students, the team at West are excited to continue championing the class of 2025 and can’t wait to see where they end up. We are proud to have been a part of their journey and thrilled to see our students take pride in their efforts, a sentiment which is echoed by Councillor Lorraine Cameron:

“They should be very proud of themselves – producing work like this is impressive and it is clear that West College Scotland are educating and supporting the students in an exemplary fashion, as evidenced at the gallery.”
