The staff and students at our Greenock Waterfront campus have been doing some fantastic fundraising all in aid of Calum’s Cabin, a holiday retreat on the Isle of Bute for children suffering from cancer to go with their families, to spend quality time together and make irreplaceable memories.

A fun filled fundraiser was held on on Tuesday 14th May which saw a group of brave lecturers take part in a wet sponge throwing competition! Well done to Ian English, Vivian Young and Ian McPhail for their courage! Other activities on the day involved a bake sale, raffle and golf putting event.

In addition to this a team of staff & students went white water rafting at Aberfeldy to raise even more funds to add to the grand total. A fabulous £1000 was raised for this fantastic local charity.

Ian English, Lecturer in Health and Social Care who helped organise the events said,

“We’ve been supporting Calum’s Cabin for a few years now.  It is good experience for the students to organise and participate in the fundraiser events.  They do all the work, so deserve all the credit for the money raised.

He continued, "Calum’s Cabin now have three facilities on the Isle of Bute and four facilities in Glasgow for families who are using the Glasgow hospital but who live some distance away.  We have considered it to be a worthwhile cause so are happy to support it each year.”

We would like to express appreciation to the small businesses locally that donated prizes for the raffle.  There were about 30 shops and organisations in Greenock that contributed to the event.  West College Scotland would like to acknowledge the generosity of the people that makes this fundraising possible.

Gill Mowatt & her mum Isobel Maxwell how volunteer for Calums Cabin collected the cheque on behalf of the charity this week. Gill highlighted how valuable the funds raised would be for the charity saying,

“We used the facilities while my son Nathan was going through the treatment for Leukaemia, so I know personally what an amazing charity Calums Cabin is and how the fabulous amount of money that the staff & students raised will benefit the families that need Calums Cabin. The charity couldn't exist if it wasn't for fundraisers like the students. Thank you all so much!”

Well done to all of the staff and students who took part!!
