Sports Coaching Student, Lynn Greenlees from West College Scotland recently scooped second place at this year’s Scottish Amateur Body-Builder Competition (NABBA).

Lynn Greenlees

The thirty-five year student from the College’s Greenock campus had only been training for a year when she entered her first competition. Speaking to Lynn about her journey she commented, “It was only recently that I got in to fitness; it was due to some personal issues that I ended up attending the gym. It started out as a hobby; something to do in my spare time but I soon caught the ‘gym bug’.

“I was working-out doing a range of classes including metafit and insanity. It first I lost a lot of weight; three stone in total but quickly after losing the weight I began to build a lot of muscle. It was then that I was approached by someone in the gym about body-building as they saw potential in me.

“Working with a trainer my love and passion for fitness flourished and I was inspired by my coach to take it further. Giving up my full-time job as a Home Help was a big decision but one that I’ve never regretted.”

In Lynn’s journey to take her career in a new direction she enrolled in the College’s Level 5 Sports Coaching course.

Lynn continued, “I absolutely love the course. It’s been great for me on a personal level but also for my training as they’ve went hand in hand. The course not only covers fitness it also covers the anatomy, nutrition, health and wellbeing and with diet playing 70% of my training it’s tied in really well.

“Getting back in to study has been challenging especially with a two children. The support I’ve had from the College has been fantastic. Everyone in the class has a passion for sport and fitness so we all have something in common and we’ve all learnt things from each other.”

After winning second place at the Scottish heats Lynn is now preparing to compete in the British heat of NABBA competition in Stockport next month. This round will see Lynn compete against finalist from across the country with the hope of making it to the finals in Germany.

Lynn said, “I’m looking forward to getting back up on stage. It’s an incredible confidence booster and the feeling of pride when you hear your name announced as a winner is unbelievable – it makes all the hard work and training worthwhile. I’m amazed at how far I’ve come in such a short space of time and I’m excited to see just how far I can go.”

As well as training for the competition Lynn is studying hard to complete her Level 5 course with the hope of going on to study at either HNC or university level in order to pursue her ambition of becoming a personal trainer.
