PUPILS in  Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire and Inverclyde will for the first time have the chance to start new apprenticeships while still at school.

Youngsters who think this might be an option for them are being encouraged to speak to their guidance teacher as soon as possible.

Foundation Apprenticeships are a two-year, industry-recognised qualification taken alongside other subjects at school. They allow pupils to spend time at college and with a local employer in their chosen industry.

Head of Foundation Apprenticeships at SDS, Diane Greenlees said: “Taken alongside other school subjects a Foundation Apprenticeship is a really valuable option for young people who want to get a head-start in their career, and can also help pupils who want to go on to college or university to stand out.

“Any Fifth Year pupils considering this option should speak to their guidance teacher or their SDS schools careers adviser as soon as possible to find out whether their school is participating and whether this would be a good option for them.”

Principal of West College Scotland, Audrey Cumberford said: “Employers often tell us of the importance of qualifications but also emphasise how vital it is for young people to develop their employability skills and benefit from getting the chance to experience work – while they study.

“Foundation Apprenticeships give young people the chance, not simply to gain a valuable qualification, but also give them first hand experience of a potential career.”

Caitlin Ritchie, who was one of the first pupils to complete a Foundation Apprenticeship said: “A Foundation Apprenticeship gives you a taste of what the real world is like before you leave school. It also gives you a break from the school routine and I feel it’s given me extra motivation to do well.

She added: “My advice to other pupils would be – definitely try it. It’s a brilliant experience and will help you with school and your future career.”
