A group of Motor Vehicle students from West College Scotland are gearing up to take on their very own Top Gear style challenge.

Hitting the road in their revamped cars the three students joined by their course lecturers will drive through twelve countries in just seven days before reaching their final destination of Prague, as part of the Motoscape Banger Rally.

Rallying the team together is Curriculum and Quality Leader, Alistair Fleming “It’s a College trip with a difference as the students will be taking part in the driving. It’s a tough but an enriching challenge to help raise money for St Margaret's Hospice. The students were selected based on their achievements and qualifications including that of a full clean drivers licence. We’re hoping the journey goes smoothly but given the chance the boys can put the skills learned over the past couple of years to good use.

They’ve proved they’ve got the ability so I have every faith in them.”

Team member David Henry from Paisley said, “We’ve already worked hard to get the cars ready for the race. One of them (an out-of-use care donated by a local man) needed some serious mechanic works: we had to take the engine completely down, repair it and mount it back in.

“I’m really looking forward to the trip. It’s a fantastic opportunity.” When asked what he wouldn’t be leaving home with he replied, “My tool kit, that’s my luxury item. Although I’m hoping the trip goes to plan there’s part of me hoping the car needs some work whilst we are away as that’s the fun part.”

Also taking to the driving seat is twenty-six year old Allister Linsteae from Knightswood, “Getting to drive cross country is an opportunity we may never get again so I’m delighted I was selected to be part of the team. It will be a challenge driving on the other side of the road but one that I’m really looking forward to.”

With their engines set and raring to go all that’s left for the students to do is to raise money for their chosen charity St Margaret’s Hospice. All donations are very much appreciated and can be made through their Just Giving page:
