The Aiming Higher Awards which took place on Wednesday 15 June brought local movers and shakers out in force to celebrate the economic and employment success and progress of those participating in the Invest in Renfrewshire programme. Amongst the nine finalists was our very own, recently appointed Science Technician Amanda Allan.

Living up to the event title, twenty year old Science Modern Apprentice Amanda Allan from Paisley has shown how hard work, a willingness to learn and a passion to succeed has led to building a better future for herself.

The nine finalists were recognised as having made outstanding contributions to their workplaces and the night’s winners were chosen as examples of Renfrewshire’s excellence.

Amanda said, ‘I'm very honoured to have won the award and I would like to thank the amazing Greenock Science Team for their help and support through my apprenticeship; especially my assessor Paula Lindsay for training me and helping me with my SVQ.

All the lecturers are fantastic at the College. Most of them have worked in the industry as researchers before becoming lecturers, so they have a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience that benefit the students.'

This is the third year that a West College Scotland Apprentice has won the Top Apprentice Category at the Aiming Higher Award Ceremonies.

Curriculum & Quality Leader, Sandra Spence commented, ‘Amanda completed her practical Scottish Vocational Qualification and theoretical Higher National Certificate elements to a very high standard - she has a real passion for science. She seized very opportunity given whether it was to work with schools, engage with outside agencies such as NASA, to showcase the College at the Scottish Parliament, support the College community through voluntary roles or support the wider community through charity work.  She will be a fantastic Technician for the College.’

I am very proud of how far I have come, from not succeeding in my high school exams to now having an HNC and a SVQ Level 3. My Modern Apprenticeship has helped prepare me for full time employment at the College.

By combining her studies with her Modern Apprenticeship Amanda is a perfect example of now obtaining hands on experience and qualifications can lead to a successful career in Science.
