With less than three weeks to prepare, our Greenock HND Visual Communication students were commissioned by The Beacon to design posters, flyers and programmes for Beacon Youth Theatre’s production of Fairy Tale in Greenock which will be performed in The Beacon on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 May.

After accepting the brief the students got straight to work, before pitching their final designs to the Beacon Panel which consisted of Laura Pearce, Learning Associate, Marianne Yeomans, Beacon Youth Theatre Director and Cat Reilly, Marketing Manager. However, unknown to the students, the final decision was cast by the Beacon Youth Theatre participants.

Laura Pearce said, ‘We were really impressed with the high quality work which the students have created in such a short period of time. ’

HND Visual Communication student Alan Jenkins (31), from Greenock, design was chosen and will be featured on all of the marketing materials for this production. Alan commented that ‘It was a great experience to work on a live, fun project like this, especially where you can actually see your work in all its glory. Visual Communications has given me a good grounding in graphic design and I’m looking forward to seek out an apprenticeship in Graphic Design when I finish college in June. Having this in my portfolio will really set me aside from other candidates.’

Laura added, ‘Beacon Youth Theatre prides itself in creating original performances which participants have complete ownership of; therefore, it made sense that the participants had the final decision. Alan's designs have really captured the essence of what the performance is all about.  They said it gave their performance an identity, which is great to hear.’

Curriculum and Quality Leader Andrea McHugh added, ‘This project has raised our departments profile to showcase the fact that we can turn around great projects within demanding deadlines. It’s shown the variety of Graphic Design styles that our students have. Infact, The Beacon was also extremely excited about another students work - Amy Tyreman and they are keen to work together on another project.’
