Twenty-five interior architecture students from the colleges Clydebank and Paisley campuses were competing to have their interior design creations put on display in the Glasgow Braehead store.

Clydebank campus student Kerr Cuinier took the top spot for his living room design which was inspired by theme of camping, cycling and the great outdoors. A 6m x 4m lifesize display of Kerr’s upcycled and sustainable room, a £100 voucher and an internship opportunity with the Ikea design team to see the building project through from start to finish are prizes now in the hands of the budding designer.

After 10 weeks of digital and practical hard work, all the students presented their final designs to Ikea’s head of communications and interiors Sharon McCracken and head of interior design, Lee McDonald.

The best design was clear to Sharon, who said: “We instantly chose Kerr’s design as the winner. Kerr presented a strong, inspiring room that was functional and embraced the sustainable theme.

“We are so impressed with his design that we have offered Kerr the opportunity to come and work with our interior design team to implement his design into the Braehead store.”

The competition design brief was to inject some fresh student design inspiration into some of the most commonly used interior sets. WCS Students were also encouraged to be sustainable and economical in their designs and upcycle ordinary items into extraordinary pieces of furniture in keeping with eco prinicples.

Sharon arranged a visit to the store with the students to help them understand the concepts behind green design brief, she said: “Its very exciting to see so many innovative designs from the students of West college Scotland. They really explored the brief to create a living room with a sustainable theme.”

All the students who submitted their creative living room ideas will have them displayed on the walls of the newly re-designed Ikea cafe by the end of November.

Runner up students include Stephanie Thomson, who won a £50 voucher, and Dylan Law who took the third place and earned a £25 voucher.
