In alignment with the Scottish Government’s commitment on menstrual dignity, West College Scotland provides free sanitary products at all of our campus locations – Paisley, Clydebank, Greenock Finnart Street and Greenock Waterfront.

Tampons, sanitary towels and other products are available for use or collection in female, gender neutral and accessible toilets across the campuses. There is no restriction on how many products students or staff can take.

Important Information on Tampon Use

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare but very serious condition caused by bacteria getting into the body and releasing harmful toxins. It's often associated with tampon use, but it can affect anyone of any age – including men and children. Around 20 cases of TSS associated with tampon use are reported in the UK each year. The following can help reduce the very small risk of TSS occurring:

·         At night, insert a fresh tampon before going to sleep and replace it first thing in the morning. Change your tampon every 4 to 8 hours or more often if needed.

·         Always wash your hands before and after inserting a tampon.

·         Only use tampons during menstruation, use only one tampon at any time, and ensure the removal of the last tampon once menstruation has finished.
