Covid-19 Student Financial Support – Student Support Funding Update February 2021

We are aware that students will be suffering a range of challenges as a result of Covid-19 and the College will look to support students where possible. In light of the recent Scottish Government announcement on student support Winter Covid Discretionary Funds, we are pleased to be able to give some guidance on how the College will look to support our students during these times.

  • Students at both FE and HE level will be considered for an uplift in the accommodation assistance that they are already in receipt of.  Students will be notified individually via email of the amount they will receive and when to expect payment. This additional payment will be made into the account that they already receive their fortnightly assistance into.  The additional payment will be a one-off uplift and only available to those students who are currently in receipt of accommodation assistance.
  • Further financial support will be made available through the Winter Covid Discretionary Fund to students at FE and HE level who are experiencing financial strain due to increased living costs.  Residency rules still apply for eligibility of funding, however, there may be some exemptions and we encourage students to contact the Student Funding Department directly for further clarity of their eligibility.
    • FE / HE students who already have an application in place through the Student Funding Department for funding assistance are invited to apply by emailing studentfunding@wcs.ac.uk to request assistance. Students will be required to give their full name, student number and a brief explanation of the financial circumstance they find themselves in as a reason to apply to the fund. This will then allow the College to consider their application for additional support.
    • FE / HE students who do not have an application in place already to the Student Funding Department for funding assistance are invited to apply via emailing studentfunding@wcs.acuk to request a link to complete a short one page application to the fund.  The link will be emailed directly to the student which will require the student to create an online funding application account.  Students will be required to give their full name, student number, bank details and a brief explanation of the financial circumstance they find themselves in as a reason to apply to the fund. This will then allow the College to consider their application for additional support.

The funding through Winter Covid Discretionary Fund at FE and HE level is cash limited and will be awarded on a first come first served basis.  We will, however, do our upmost to accommodate as many students as we possibly can.  Students who are in receipt of other government funds must make sure that any financial assistance from this fund will not affect their payments prior to making their application and are therefore encouraged to seek clarity of this from the source they are paid funds from.

Applications can be made up to and including 14 March 2021.  All successful applications will be informed of the decision and the funds paid by 31 March 2021.  Applications made after 14 March 2021 will unfortunately not be considered.
