Enabling Services is a service for students requiring extra help with their studies, including those with:

  • visual or hearing impairments
  • specific learning differences, for example dyslexia or dyspraxia
  • autism
  • physical or medical conditions
  • mental health issues

Contact Enabling Services staff at an early stage if you are accepted onto a college course. This will allow staff to provide you with the educational support you need.

Your needs are discussed with experienced staff, who will provide solutions, including access to assistive technology, if required.  They can also offer:

  • extra time for assessments
  • screening for dyslexia and dyscalculia
  • training on specialist equipment for example live scribe pens or dictaphones
  • training on specialist software for example Inspiration, Dragon
  • advice and assessment for HNC/D students on Disabled Students Allowance (DSA)

Application Process

Enabling Services staff want to help you succeed and achieve your full potential by ensuring funding is in place to support your studies. If you tick ‘disability’ on your application form, this information will be picked up by the College Enabling Services Team. In due course, you will be invited to an informal discussion to agree your support entitlements. During this process you will be asked to complete a Personal Learning Support Plan (PLSP).

General information and advice will be given about educational support available in your campus, including:

  • dyslexia screening and assessments
  • applications for Disabled Student allowance
  • training in the use of Assistive Technologies
  • provision of exam support
  • provision of 1-2-1 support
  • access to specialist IT
