Mateusz Antkiewicz, originally came to the UK from Poland back in 2010. After working full time for a number of years he decided to return to College, firstly to improve his English skills with an ESOL course at our Paisley campus.
5 years later he is excelling in his studies with the Greenock Waterfront Social Science department. The 31 year old from Paisley, started out his Social Science studies journey with an NC Police Services which is ultimately the career path he would like to follow.
However he was keen to develop his knowledge further and progressing his studies in Social Science allowed him to do just that, “I chose to move onto the Introduction to Social Science & Criminology as it gave me a lot of different options and covered a wide range of subjects that I was interested in.”
Now studying his HNC Social Science, Mateusz shared his experience of the College saying,
“I really like the Waterfront campus as it is slightly smaller but really welcoming. The lecturers are great and everyone knows each other. My lecturers have been so positive and really push you to progress and help you to get there.”
Having progressed through the variety of courses the department has to offer Mateusz shared that this has helped him prepare for the HNC, “The course I am on now is challenging but covered topics such as sociology, criminology and history in my earlier courses has given me a great foundation for studies. They are all connected and cover broad range of subjects.”
He has balanced part time work with his studies and although College is his priority he has said the lecturers are very flexible. He said, “I have has such a good experience. It is a bit decision to change from full time job but I loved meeting new people and seeing things from a different perspective. Lot of people on my course have families and other commitments but the department are so supportive.”
Speaking about what he enjoyed about the HNC he said, “Psychology is my favourite subject, but history is interesting and you always learn something new.”
Now considering his options for the future, Mateusz said the possibilities are endless,
“I could progress to university or return to do my HND. I’ve also got options to move straight into employment. I’d love to pursue a career in the Police but I’ve also thought about teaching. That’s what is great about the course there are so many options!”
