Twenty three year old Kirsty Stobo, who joined the College’s MA Business and Administration Modern Apprentice in 2010 and is now a Skills Programme Administrator at West College Scotland tells us how her apprenticeship opened doors to a new job and a bright career.
Kirsty said, ‘I saw the modern apprenticeship advertised in the newspaper and it seemed like the perfect opportunity as I was unsure on what of what I wanted to after school.
I’ve always been very organised and I did well in my Higher Administration so thought it seemed like a sensible option.’
Each year more than 37,000 people start Modern Apprenticeships in order to earn while they learn, gain on-the-job training and to achieve nationally recognised qualifications.
Kirsty added, ‘I’d never heard of a modern apprenticeship before, but as soon as I started it, I loved it.
Earning, whilst learning was great as it gave me independence, but at the same time I earned valuable skills through my work experience that future employers look for.
Kirsty explains how her modern apprenticeship helped her start a career without having to enter full-time education. She comments, ‘I was adamant I didn’t want to go to University when I was unsure of what I wanted to do. I didn’t want to start a course, leave half way through if I didn’t enjoy it and not come away with a qualification.’
Kirsty secured a job as a Skills Programme Administrator in late 2011 and hasn’t looked back since.
‘I applied for a College job just before I completed my MA and I was over the moon to find out I’d been successful. Undoubtedly the MA gave me the advantage that other applicants didn’t have. My advice would be to anyone considering an MA would be to go for it and grab the opportunity. I was 17 when I left school and the MA has given me the foundations for a successful career.’
