If it wasn’t for my Lecturer at West College Scotland who knows what would have happened……
Here’s how David and James went on to achieve their ambitions and how they came to be running their own company.
“James and I are very different – a bit like chalk and cheese. So it’s no surprise that our journeys into joinery were completely different, too.
"I was at College studying NPA Construction, covering a range of trades including Painting and Decorating, Bricklaying, Plumbing and, of course, Joinery. My joinery skills must have stood out as my lecturer took it upon himself to call round local businesses looking for an apprenticeship in joinery for me. So I guess you could say, joinery chose me!"
James, on the other hand, knew from the moment he left school that he wanted to get an apprenticeship. Taking the initiative, he got himself an apprenticeship by calling round local businesses, which is how he ended up studying Carpentry and Joinery at West College Scotland.
James takes up the story:
"I thoroughly enjoyed my time at College. The lecturers and facilities at Greenock were first class.
"The lecturers made the course easy and were always on hand to help and give advice. They’re all joiners themselves so they know what they‘re talking about and are able to pass on their knowledge and expertise.
"David and I had been working at Whyte and Christie for about eight years. When the opportunity came up for us to take on the company, we jumped at the chance!"
David and James are now beginning to see their hard work pay off. They've even taken on their first apprentice and, as James says:
"To be able to help keep the tradition and heritage of joinery and carpentry alive is something which we both feel strongly about. It’s a fantastic feeling to be able to hand our passion and love for the trade over to the next generation.
"There are so many things we love about this job. Taking a project from start to finish, working with our hands to produce a piece of work that exceeds the client's expectations is what we strive for and what makes it all worthwhile."
