Each year, the College presents a very special prize to a student who has excelled academically during their time at college.

This year, the prize is awarded to HNC Applied Science graduate, Beth Honeyman,

The Finnart Street campus Science team had no hesitation nominating 20 year old Beth who has demonstrated an exceptional level of achievement during her time at the College.   Having worked in a community pharmacy since aged 15, Beth continued this role alongside her studies. She has used her time in employment to gain further qualifications including qualifications to gain new skills incorporated within the widening role of pharmacists such as performing blood pressure checks and cholesterol tests. The pandemic saw Beth take on extra duties in her role as a Pharmacy Dispenser and provided her with first-hand experience of how important community pharmacists are to the NHS, which only strengthened her drive to pursue a career in Pharmacy.

During her HNC studies, Beth took on extra units and has achieved an exceptional 16 credits with her HNC, a grade average of over 90% and an A in her Graded Unit.  She has also successfully completed the SSERC Safety in Microbiology training course which recognises her practical skills in this subject area. Her lecturers highlighted her outstanding time management skills, ability to meet deadlines and consistently producing work of the highest academic standards, all whilst juggling her work in the pharmacy. Throughout her course Beth has also demonstrated a friendly, and supportive role with her peers, qualities which well serve her well in her chosen career.

Now progressing to year 2 of a Masters programme in Pharmaceutical Science at Strathclyde University, Beth shared her College experience prepared her for the next step saying,

“I enjoyed doing the laboratory work during my course as I feel I was able to further develop my understanding of certain aspects of the course and I gained skills that I will be able to use at university. I received such detailed and helpful learning materials from the College, and appreciated how supportive the lecturers were.”

Although it was challenging to balance her work and studies, Beth was determined to achieve the A she needed in her HNC to progress to university.  On being awarded the Student of the Year Beth said, “I am honoured and grateful to be chosen as Student of the year. I really appreciate being awarded such a prestigious prize.”
