Overview

What will I learn?

This qualification is designed to engage and motivate Candidates who are interested in learning about the automotive retail industry. It is aimed at learners who prefer and respond to 'hands-on' learning. Therefore, it has a practical approach to assessment and includes many visual questioning techniques which will stimulate and interest learners.

This Diploma is ideal for those learners who wish to undertake a qualification which will support their progress to a higher-level qualification. It can also supplement their progress to Nationals and other appropriate destinations such as Employment, a Modern Apprenticeship (College Day Release) or to the next level of study.

During the course candidates will undertake the following units:

  • Knowledge of Health, Safety & Good Housekeeping in the Automotive Environment
  • Skills in Health, Safety & Good Housekeeping in the Automotive Environment
  • Knowledge of Support for Job Roles in the Automotive Environment
  • Skills in Supporting Job Roles in the Automotive Environment
  • Knowledge of Materials, Fabrication, Tools & Measuring Devices used in the Automotive Environment
  • Skills in Materials, Fabrication, Tools & Measuring Devices used in the Automotive Environment
  • Knowledge of Diagnosis and Rectification of Vehicle Auxiliary Electrical Faults
  • Skills in Diagnosing and Rectifying Vehicle Auxiliary Electrical Faults
  • Knowledge of Diagnosis and Rectification of Light Vehicle Engine Faults
  • Skills in Diagnosing and Rectifying Light Vehicle Engine Faults
  • Knowledge of Diagnosis and Rectification of Light Vehicle Chassis Faults
  • Skills in Diagnosing and Rectifying Light Vehicle Chassis System Faults
  • Knowledge of Diagnosis and Rectification of Light Vehicle Transmission and Driveline Faults
  • Skills in Inspecting Light Vehicles Using Prescribed Methods

What qualifications do I need?

Entry Requirements is successful completion of IMI Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles at SCQF Level 5, and it is also recommended that candidates have a National 4 Grade in Maths, English and a Science based subject, this may be waived dependant on candidate experience, maturity and interest in working in the retail automotive industry at the discretion of the department.

Access to a laptop/digital device (This may be available as a loan device if required) and an internet connection will be advantageous.

What can I do after?

This qualification may allow candidates to progress into Employment, a Modern Apprenticeship (College Day Release) or to the following IMI Qualifications:

Part time

  • IMI Level 3 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Replacement
  • IMI Level 4 Award in the Diagnosis, Testing and Repair of Electric/Hybrid Vehicles and Components (Minimum entry criteria applies)
  • IMI Level 3 Award in Automotive Refrigerant Handling (EC 842-2006))
  • IMI Level 3 Award in Automotive Air Conditioning Servicing and Maintenance (EC 842-2006)
  • IMI Level 3 Award in Automotive Air Conditioning and Climate Control Diagnosis and Repair (EC 842-2006)
  • IMI Level 3 Award in MOT Test Centre Management (Minimum entry criteria applies)
