Overview

Why study at West?

Our Learner Development courses are suitable for anyone who has had additional support for learning at school. If you are a new applicant and have not attended a full-time college course before you may want to consider the Development course in the first instance as the Pathways courses are normally a progression route from that course.

What will I learn?

This is a course for those with additional needs who have the potential for independent travel.

You will participate in a variety of creative and practical subjects to develop independent living skills.

What qualifications do I need?

You must be able to show you can work at SCQF level 2. You'll also need to be able to work independently and as part of a group. Part of the course involves going into the local community for activities, so you must be willing and able to do this.

Most successful applicants will have successfully completed the Development course. Those who can demonstrate they are working at a higher level though can enter the learner development programme at Pathways 1.

You should be able to understand and follow verbal instructions. If you require your own personal care support you must let us know when you apply for the course and we will discuss this at your interview. Your needs will be confirmed by the school or the agency that referred you to the college.

This support must be agreed and in place before the start of your course.

At your interview you should also show that you are enthusiastic about developing new skills and participating in new experiences.

What can I do after?

After successfully completing this course you may be able to get part time voluntary or supported employment.

Or you can develop your skills further by studying another course, such as:

  • Pathways 2
  • Community course
