Course overview

What will I learn?

The Access to Higher English programme combines two SQA units - Communication 4 (FA1W 12) and Literature 1 (FA58 12). The programme is tutor-supported throughout the academic year and is assessed, rather than exam-based. You will be immersed in interactive learning activities, designed to strengthen critical thinking and problem-solving skills, whilst applying a holistic approach to your learning. You will develop skills in analysing, evaluating, interpreting and conveying complex, written and oral information, whilst developing communication for a wide range of vocational contexts.

Together, the SQA units are accepted by some colleges and universities as an equivalent qualification to Higher English. Although, if you are intending on using this qualification as part of an application for a course, it is advised that you should first check course application requirements.

What qualifications do I need?

Candidates would be expected to have achieved English or National Literacy (SCQF Level 5) or completed a Creative Writing course. An entrance test will be required for those candidates who have not achieved any of these. Entry will be at the discretion of the college.

What can I do after?
