Course overview

What will I learn?

If you would like a career in Early Learning and Childcare, but lack the necessary qualifications, this could be the course for you. Access to Childhood Practice is part of the Scottish Wider Access Programme (SWAP) and is specifically for people who have been out of full-time education for at least 5 years. It prepares adult returners for entry into Higher Education within college or university. The course is taught using a variety of Learning & Teaching methods.

You will learn about:

  • Child development theory
  • The holistic needs of children and young people
  • Working with children in an early education and childcare setting
  • The importance of play
  • The curriculum for early years
  • Importance of safeguarding children and young people

What qualifications do I need?

There is no formal entry requirement, but you must have been out of formal education for at least five years and have the ability to work towards SCQF level 6. For a place on the course, you will need to attend an interview, and provide a personal statement and two references.

What can I do after?

After successfully completing this course, you will have the skills needed to get a role at support worker level or you could progress to the HNC Childhood Practice Award.
