Twenty-nine-year-old Nathan McGonigal from Greenock has always had a passion for cooking and working as a Kitchen Porter at a local care home gave him a taste for the industry. Striving for more and with some encouragement from a friend he decided to follow his dream and apply to study Professional Cookery at West College Scotland. Going from strength to strength, Nathan has now secured his first Chef role at CalMac Ferries.

Speaking to Nathan about his journey he said, “As a young lad I always had a passion and interest in cooking thanks to my dad introducing me to the basics.

‘I was working as a Kitchen Porter within a care home but as a hard-working hands-on type of guy I wanted more. During lockdown my good friend gave me the nudge and encouragement I needed to apply to college and I’ve never looked back.

Every time I’m in class or the kitchen I’m right at home in my zone, it’s my happy place where I feel I can excel.

‘I’ve been really lucky to have a lecturer who has encouraged me from the start and who always goes the extra mile. He wants his students to excel and succeed, but always installed in us that you must have that drive as well.

'My lecturer David Smith and the whole College in general have been so supportive and accommodating throughout.

‘I recently applied for a Chef post with CalMac Ferries Ltd and was successful in gaining a position on one of the Western Isles Routes. With the help from David who has been flexible with my timetable I’ve been able to attend a number of CalMac training courses and I’m now just waiting for my start date.

I’m truly grateful for all those who have helped me get to this place and indebted to the College for the work they have done in supporting me to this point.
