Charlene McManus is a graduate of West College Scotland who is now running her own business. Charlotte completed a Modern Apprenticeship with the College and learned to ply her trade through a combination of classroom-based learning as well as gaining practical experience by working in industry.

“I had always wanted to be a hairdresser. I gained an SVQ level 3 Hairdressing at West College Scotland and while I was there I worked in well-known Glasgow salons such as Rita Rusk and the Rainbow Room.”

"I really enjoyed my time at College. It was a great experience and I learned so many new techniques. The college course gave me a broad overview of everything and this was strengthened by industry visits and course trips to London!"

Upon completion of her Apprenticeship, Charlene opened her own salon.

“I’ve now opened my own salon in Clydebank and so much of what I learned at college, I’m now able to apply to my own business. Opening the salon has been the most exciting but also the most frightening thing I have ever done!”

Modern Apprenticeships offer anyone over 16 paid employment combined with the opportunity to train for a job from a wide number of sectors and industries, helping young people start a career without having to enter full-time education.  All Modern Apprenticeships are developed by the industries they are relevant to, giving apprentices the opportunity to enter the workplace and develop their skills while they earn a living.

“I’m delighted to be able to give something back by setting up in the local area – I even employ some West College Scotland students through the Modern Apprenticeship Scheme.”

Abbie Lyden (17) & Shannon McManus (17) are completing their Hairdressing Modern Apprenticeship at Charlene’s salon, Ultimate Look. Shannon said;

“It’s great to be able to apply what I’ve learned in a real working environment – it helps you get that extra bit of experience you need to be successful in this industry.”

Abbie had been studying in Glasgow but moved to Clydebank and quickly had the opportunity to do a Modern Apprenticeship at West College Scotland.

“It’s been fantastic being able to earn a wage whilst still studying and doing what I love. Working with new people every day keeps me on my toes and helps me stay at the cutting edge of industry demands.”
